How To Make Biltong At Home

Making biltong at home is really easy if you have the right setup. You really don't need anything fancy. Here is a simple biltong setup for year-round production.

These components are easy to find and you don't need exactly what I have here. Try and find similar components. Everything here can be purchased on Amazon or your local hardware store.

The important parts:

Box. It can be plastic, wood or cardboard. I like plastic because its really easy to clean. I just hose it down after using it. Easy! I also like the fact that I can see what's going on inside.

Wooden sticks. These are just normal wooden sticks that I cut to size. Make some holes in the box for the sticks to hang the biltong from.

Extractor fan. Easy to get anywhere. Try to get a small one. you don't need a powerful fan. You DON'T want a fan that blows air onto the meat. You want to extract air. This is how we control the humidity.

Heating lamp. This is a reptile heating lamp. You can get them on Amazon or any pet store. Put the lamp at the bottom.

Temperature and humidity meter. Easy to find as well but verty important. You want the temperature as close to 20 degrees C as you can get it. Not more! And you need your humidity under 60%. 40-50% is perfect.

Hanging hooks. The hooks you can get anywhere. In the past I used cable ties or normal stainless steel wire.
